Financial Literacy Research Project

Hi everyone,

Last week, we started a research project that will be worth two test grades for math this quarter. The project is due on Tuesday, May 17th, but scholars should be working on it every day in class, as well as at home if they do not meet their daily goals. If you need a copy of the packet, click here. Scholars received their set of questions in class, and they need to come up with three more research questions on their topic with their groups.

Here is the Timeline and Daily Goals:

Friday, May 6th: Answer three questions, come up with three new questions
Monday, May 9th: Answer five questions
Tuesday, May 10th: Answer five questions
Wednesday, May 11th: Double check all questions to make sure they are answered completed and have two sources, begin slideshow
Thursday, May 12th: Finish slideshow
Friday, May 13th: No Classes (Field Day)
Monday, May 16th: Rehearse Slideshow, double check for mistakes
Tuesday, May 17th: Present Slideshows to Class

Beginning this week: Financial Literacy PBL!

Hi everyone,

Now that state tests are over, we are beginning out Project Based Learning season, or PBLs. In math, we will be studying Financial Literacy, which means that scholars will be learning about everything related to money.

Here is the schedule (and links to worksheets) for this week:

Monday: No class (field day)

Tuesday: Watch 30 for 30: Broke, take quiz.

Wednesday: Complete K and W sections of Financial Literacy KWL (What I know, what I want to know, and what I've learned), complete goal setting worksheet.

Thursday: Budget Basics: Saving up to buy a car. Complete budgeting worksheet. Add the following terms to the Financial Toolbox:

Budget: An estimate of expected income and expenses for a future period of time.
Example: Set a budget for yourself of spending no more than $10 per week at the deli.

Income: Money received during a period of time from wages, interest, and other sources.
Example: I receive an income of $30 a week from my $20 allowance and $10 for babysitting my cousin.

Expenses: Money spent during a period of time to pay for goods or services.
Example: My family had some unplanned expenses this month because we had to fix the car and take my brother to the emergency room when he broke his arm.

Friday: Continue the saving up for a car scenario with "Where Did the Money Go?" Complete the Gross and Net Pay worksheet. Add the following terms to the financial toolbox:

Gross Pay: An employee’s pay before being reduced by taxes and other deductions.

Example: Kobe Bryant’s salary was $25 million dollars in 2016, but he didn’t take home all $25 million because that was his gross pay.

Net Pay: Gross pay minus taxes and other deductions (voluntary and involuntary).

Example: Even though my mom pays her employees $4,000 per month, they only take home about $3,000 in net pay.

3D Shape Project, State Test Prep, and Test on Friday!

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I've posted, since we've been in test prep mode to get ready for the New York State Tests in April! However, we do have some updates:

-On Friday, we will have a Ratio and Proportions Test. It will be all multiple choice questions.
-We are continuing with test prep up until the state tests in the middle of April, so scholars should be focused on studying their ELA and Math prep books at night.
-We are doing a 3D Shape project! We started it today, and will finish it in class tomorrow. Since some scholars need to work on it tonight for homework to catch up, here are the guidelines:

3D Shape Project:

1. Use a separate piece of paper for each of your group's three shapes: Rectangular Prism, Triangular Prism, and 4-Sided Pyramid.

2. Trace all sides of the shape onto the paper. Use your ruler to find and label the dimensions of each side in centimeters. Round to the nearest centimeter. Ex: 2.2 cm -> 2 cm, 2.5 cm -> 3 cm.

3. Find the surface area by adding up the area of each side. Show your work!

4. Draw the "3D" version of the shape (do your best!), label the dimensions in centimeters, and find the volume. (You learned the formulas yesterday, except for the pyramid. For that shape, use V = 1/3 Length * Width * Height.)

5. On a separate piece of paper, write HOW you found the surface area and volume of each shape.

Advice: Think of this as a Book 3 question, where you need to show your work AND explain what you did in complete sentences. However, unlike Book 3 on the state test, here creativity counts! Use color to make your project look great.

Homework for last week of the marking period!

Hi everyone,

Our final week of the marking period is here! We aren't having an assessment this week, so if you are looking to boost up your grade, make sure you turn in the extra credit project (link in last week's post) and the test corrections for Friday's Rational Numbers test.

This week, we are finally starting my favorite math topic, algebra!

Here is the homework if you are missing anything. If you are struggling with the content, the homework helper on the right is a great resource! Look at lessons 2.17-2.22 for algebra.

Final week of Rational Numbers!

Hello everyone,

We will be finishing our study of rational numbers this week and taking an exam on Friday. The exam will cover addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of positive and negative numbers, including integers, decimals, and fractions.

To study, look through Lessons 1-8 in the Ready! textbooks, at the Homework Helper for lessons 2.1-2.16 (link is on the right), and at the homework assignments and Do Nows from class. I will be available for tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch on the 6th grade floor.

If you need some extra credit, this optional assignment is available. A paper copy will be given to the scholars on Monday. It is due by 4:15 PM next Tuesday, February 2nd.

Week of January 19th-22nd: Fraction Frenzy!

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great long weekend! Here is the plan for the week:

Tuesday: Converting between fractions and decimals
Wednesday: Multiplying and dividing fractions
Thursday: Adding and subtracting fractions
Friday: Fractions quiz

And, to connect this week to the past two weeks, we will be doing all of the fraction problems using both positive and negative numbers. If this sounds impossible to you, or even slightly difficult, you need to play some math games!

Here are some fraction games. You can also download tons of great free apps to your smartphone or tablet. Any game that has you solving problems involving adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing, especially with fractions, will help you out!

Homework for Week of January 11-15th

Hello everyone,

This week, we are continuing our study of positive and negative numbers by learning how to multiply and divide with them. Here are the lessons for the week:

Monday: Lesson 2.3, homework is here.
Tuesday: Lesson 2.4, homework is on the second page of Monday's homework.
Wednesday: Review for Integers Test, homework is to study for the test
Thursday: Integers Test, no homework
Friday: Test corrections, homework is to complete test corrections (due next Friday)

Scholars need to bring their new Ready! textbooks to class every day from now on, along with their Integer Packets. Their integer packets are just photocopies of the Math In Focus textbook pages for lessons 2.3-2.4, so that they can take notes directly onto the pages. If you misplace your packet, you can get a copy here.

Because scholars will not have access to calculators on Thursday's test, it's very important to work on mental math: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are all important skills. I recommend going to http://www.hoodamath.com/ and clicking on "math subject," then selecting the skill (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) that you would like to work on.

There are also some great free apps available for smartphones and tablets. Any game that focuses on the four basic operations will be a great help!
